When it turns to leverage

The threat changes shape. It stops being someone trying to reach a child and starts being someone trying to get something from one.

What changes

Sextortion is the case that defines this band, and its defining feature is speed — an approach, an image, and a demand, sometimes inside a single evening. The second feature is shame, which is the actual mechanism. A child who is too ashamed to tell an adult is the entire business model.

What the household does

  • The shame conversation, had in advance and had explicitly — you will not be in trouble, and we will handle it
  • The one-tap help button on the child’s phone, tested once so they know it works
  • A named adult who is not a parent, because sometimes it will not be you and that is fine
  • Reporting routes established before they are needed, not googled at midnight

Do this now Say the sentence out loud, now: “If someone ever has a photo of you, you come to me and you are not in trouble.” It is the whole defence, and it costs nothing.
